Access Rules Should Match the Way You Operate

A well-installed system can still create frustration if the permissions are poorly planned. Before selecting hardware, identify which doors need control, who needs access, and what access should look like during normal hours, after hours, and emergencies.

Start by grouping users by role. Front-office staff may need the main entrance and shared office areas. IT personnel may need server room access. Store managers may need alarm and cash office access. Also consider how the building functions when the power or network is unavailable. Businesses should establish clear procedures for onboarding, role changes, lost credentials, and offboarding. Managers should also know how to respond when a door is forced, held open, or unable to communicate with the system. These processes do not need to be complicated, but they should be consistent.
