Start With What the Network Must Support

Category 6A is worth considering when the site needs 10-gigabit performance over full horizontal cable runs, expects high-bandwidth demand, or is being built out for a longer service life. It is thicker and less flexible than Cat6, which can increase material and installation complexity. The added cost may be justified in a server room, a high-density office, a new commercial buildout, or a location with extensive data transfer needs. It may not be necessary for every basic workstation drop.
Fiber optic cabling serves a different purpose. It is commonly used to connect network closets, separate floors, detached buildings, or long-distance runs that exceed copper limitations. Fiber is also useful where electrical interference is a concern or where higher backbone capacity is required. A business does not need fiber at every desk, but a fiber backbone can provide a smart path for expansion in larger facilities.
The decision is not simply about buying the highest category available. It depends on cable distance, building layout, network equipment, application requirements, budget, and the expected life of the installation. Build Around a Central Network Closet
Every cable needs a clearly organized destination. In a small business, that may be a wall-mounted rack in a secure back-office room. In a larger facility, it may be a dedicated main distribution frame with additional network closets serving separate sections of the building.
The network closet should be secure, accessible to authorized staff, protected from moisture, and kept reasonably cool. It needs adequate power for switches, routers, firewalls, battery backup systems, and other equipment. It should not become a general storage room. Boxes, cleaning supplies, and unplanned equipment can block access, restrict airflow, and make service work unnecessarily difficult.
Use patch panels to terminate permanent horizontal cabling, then connect those ports to network switches with short patch cords. This approach keeps permanent cable runs protected and makes moves, changes, and troubleshooting easier. Directly terminating long cable runs into switches may work temporarily, but it creates strain on equipment ports and complicates future changes.
For businesses with cameras, access control, phones, or wireless access points powered through Ethernet, confirm that the network switch has enough Power over Ethernet capacity. Port count alone is not enough. A switch may have 24 PoE ports but still lack the total power budget needed for multiple high-power access points or PTZ cameras.
Label Everything That Matters
A cable installation is only as useful as its documentation when service is needed six months later. Each data jack, patch panel port, cable run, and switch port should have a clear, consistent label.
A simple format works best: identify the room or area, outlet number, and associated closet or rack. The label on the wall plate should match the patch panel and documentation. Documentation should include a basic floor plan showing outlet locations, equipment rack layout, cable identifiers, and test results. The most expensive cabling mistakes are often small shortcuts made during installation. Poorly terminated connectors, unlabeled drops, unsupported ceiling runs, overloaded cable bundles, and patchwork additions can all lead to recurring outages and difficult service calls.
