The front door is often the weakest point in an otherwise well-run office. Employees may hold it open for someone they recognize, deliveries can arrive during busy periods, and a mechanical key may still work long after a former employee has left. Start With the Entry Points That Matter

Begin with a walk-through of every way someone can enter the occupied space. A secure office entry plan should account for normal use, after-hours access, deliveries, emergency exit requirements, and staff who work early or late.

Ask practical questions during the review. Can a visitor reach workstations, files, inventory, or network equipment without being noticed? Does a rear door latch fully every time? Build a Visitor Process People Will Follow

For a smaller office, the process may be as simple as having visitors ring a doorbell, check in with reception, and wear a dated visitor badge. The system should fit the traffic level. An overly complicated process is likely to be bypassed by busy staff.

Contractors and delivery personnel deserve special attention. Give regular vendors a designated entrance, access schedule, and escort rules where appropriate. Use Cameras to Verify, Not Just Record

CCTV coverage is most effective when it supports a specific operational purpose. Worn hinges, damaged frames, weak strike plates, failing closers, and misaligned locks can create security problems and premature equipment failures.

The hardware also has to work with life-safety requirements. Exit doors must allow people to leave safely during an emergency, and fire-rated openings may require specific components and installation practices. This is not an area for improvised wiring or hardware substitutions. A proper installation considers the door type, frame condition, local code requirements, power needs, emergency release behavior, and fire alarm integration where applicable.

A common mistake is selecting hardware based on appearance or price alone. The correct choice depends on the existing door, the level of traffic, required security, backup power needs, and how the door must operate during a power outage.

Protect the Systems Behind the Door

Controllers, cameras, network switches, cabling, power supplies, and cloud or on-site management platforms all need to operate consistently. If the network is unreliable, cameras may drop recordings. If power is interrupted, doors and controllers need to behave according to the planned safety and security configuration.

Use dedicated, labeled cabling and secure equipment locations rather than exposed wiring or ad hoc connections. Where continuity matters, provide appropriate battery backup and test it. Limit administrator access to the management platform, use unique credentials, and remove access promptly when responsibilities change. Train Staff Against Tailgating and Workarounds

The best equipment can be undermined by everyday habits. Tailgating occurs when an unauthorized person follows an employee through a controlled door, often because the employee is trying to be polite. Door propping can start as a convenience for deliveries and become a routine security gap.

Staff training does not need to be dramatic or time-consuming. Explain which entrances visitors should use, when employees should challenge unfamiliar people, who can approve after-hours access, and how to report a broken door or lost credential. Make the expected behavior easy to remember and easy to follow.

Managers should also avoid creating incentives to bypass the system. If employees prop a door because their assigned entrance is inconvenient or their reader fails regularly, address the operational cause. Security improves when the approved process is the simplest process.

Maintain the Entry System Before It Fails

Office entry security is not a one-time installation. Door closers wear out, credentials are lost, cameras need cleaning or repositioning, and software settings need periodic review.
